Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of perioperative respiratory muscle training (RMT) with gamification for patients undergoing lobectomy for lung cancer. Perioperative complications are a concern for these patients, and RMT has been shown to reduce these complications. However, traditional RMT methods are often difficult to continue for a long duration. Gamification, using a tablet game, was considered as a way to address this issue.

Patients who underwent lobectomy between April 2020 and March 2021 were enrolled in the study and played the tablet game. The game involved controlling a ball on a rail using the volume of the user's voice, promoting speaking and breathing actions. The study compared the gamification group, consisting of five patients, with a control group of 42 patients.

The results showed that there were no perioperative complications in the gamification group. Additionally, respiratory function test results at three months postoperatively were higher than predicted in both groups, with better improvement in the gamification group in the early postoperative period. The gamification group played the game once a week on average for about six minutes per session.

The satisfaction questionnaire results indicated that the majority of participants found the game more enjoyable than other breathing exercises and would recommend it to others. Some requests for improvement included reducing the volume and repetition of images.

In conclusion, the gamification-based respiratory training showed potential in improving respiratory function in the early postoperative period and reducing perioperative complications for lung cancer patients undergoing lobectomy. The tablet game provided an enjoyable and engaging way for patients to continue RMT.
