Pdf Summary
This study aimed to analyze the diagnostic capability of follow-up tests performed on patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after surgical resection. The research included a retrospective review of 392 patients who underwent curative resection for stage I-IIIA NSCLC between 2010 and 2020. The data collected included demographic and clinical information, as well as clinical, laboratory, and radiological exams conducted during follow-up to identify relevant tests for the diagnosis of tumor relapse.

The results showed that the majority of routine follow-up evaluations performed were not relevant in the management of the patient. Only body CT scans exceeded the threshold of 5% profitability, but did not reach 10% even in the highest stage of disease. The profitability of the tests increased when they were carried out in a non-routine follow-up setting. This suggests that new follow-up strategies based on scientific evidence should be defined to improve the profitability of the tests performed.

The demographic and clinical data of the patients included in the study showed that there was a higher percentage of male patients (67.1%) compared to female patients (32.9%). The median age of the patients was 66.0 years. The majority of patients were diagnosed with stage IA or IB NSCLC, and the most common histology was adenocarcinoma.

The study concludes that the diagnostic capability of follow-up tests in NSCLC patients is limited, with routine evaluations being largely ineffective. More research is needed to define new follow-up strategies that can improve the profitability of the tests performed and allow for earlier detection of tumor relapse in NSCLC patients. This will ultimately lead to better oncological treatment outcomes.
