Pdf Summary
This is a case report of a 58-year-old male who was diagnosed with a carcinoid tumor of the lung. The patient was asymptomatic and the tumor was detected during regular oncological monitoring. The tumor was centrally located, well-circumscribed, and encapsulated, and measured 2.6 cm in diameter. Histological examination revealed a solid and trabecular pattern in the tumor cells, which were positive for CD 56, chromogranin, and synaptofizin. Additionally, numerous mature bone trabeculae were found within the tumor. The patient underwent middle lobectomy and lymph node dissection, and had an uneventful postoperative course. The final diagnosis was a typical carcinoid of the lung with prominent ossification. The patient did not receive any adjuvant therapy and has remained without relapse of the tumor 36 months after surgery. Ossification is rare in carcinoid tumors of the lung, and its presence may indicate a more aggressive tumor. Therefore, patients with this subtype should be closely followed.
