EP14.03-004. Neuro-cognitive Effect of HS-PCI in LS-SCLC

In a study conducted by Suryakanta Acharya, it was found that hippocampal sparing prophylactic cranial irradiation (HS-PCI) was effective in reducing symptomatic brain metastasis in patients with limited stage small-cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC). LS-SCLC is a highly aggressive form of cancer with poor prognosis, especially due to early brain metastasis. The study included 10 patients who received HS-PCI with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) during 2020. All patients received a total dose of 25 Gy delivered in 10 fractions. Neuro-cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) before and after treatment.<br /><br />The results of the study showed that all patients were alive without any significant deterioration in neuro-cognitive function compared to baseline measurements. The mean MoCA score before treatment was 27 out of 30, and the mean score after treatment was 26 out of 30. None of the patients developed brain metastasis at the last follow-up. This suggests that HS-PCI has a minimal impact on neuro-cognitive function in the short term.<br /><br />However, the study acknowledges that longer follow-up is needed to determine the long-term impact of HS-PCI on neuro-cognitive function. It is important to note that this study was based on a small sample size and further research is required to validate these findings. Overall, the study suggests that HS-PCI can be an effective treatment option for reducing brain metastasis in LS-SCLC patients without negatively affecting their neuro-cognitive function in the short term.
