Pdf Summary
The study analyzed the treatment and outcomes of patients with limited-stage small cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC) using data from the Canadian SCLC Database (CASCADE). LS-SCLC is a potentially curable form of lung cancer that can be treated with concurrent chemoradiation therapy followed by prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI). However, relapses are common and overall survival (OS) is poor.

The CASCADE database includes information from 8 academic institutions across Canada, with preliminary data available from 3 sites: BC Cancer, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (PMCC), and the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre (TOHCC). The study looked at baseline characteristics, diagnostic details, and treatment information for patients with LS-SCLC.

The results showed that LS-SCLC is potentially curable; however, a significant minority of patients in the database were unable to receive curative intent therapy. The uptake of PCI, a part of curative treatment, was found to be low in the real-world setting.

The study also provided information on treatment patterns, overall survival, and overall survival by treatment. The median overall survival was 19.8 months, with 1-year survival at 68%, 2-year survival at 42%, and 5-year survival at 22%.

In terms of treatment, thoracic radiotherapy was given to 60% of patients, while systemic therapy was given to 40%. The median overall survival for patients receiving thoracic radiotherapy was 20.7 months, compared to 8.0 months for those not receiving it. Similarly, the median overall survival for patients receiving systemic therapy was 24.0 months, compared to 12.0 months for those not receiving it.

The study concluded that LS-SCLC is a potentially curable disease, but there are challenges in delivering curative intent therapy to all patients. The low uptake of PCI suggests a need for improved adherence to treatment guidelines. The results will be further validated as data from additional sites becomes available in the CASCADE database.
