Pdf Summary
This study sponsored by Ipsen aims to examine real-world resource use and costs among Medicare patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) based on platinum sensitivity and stage. The study utilizes data from the 2016-2020 Medicare Parts A/B/D 100% Research Identifiable Files and includes patients who were continuously enrolled in Parts A/B/D, had one or more lung cancer claims, and were treated with first-line platinum-based regimens. Patients with certain conditions and prior diagnoses were excluded.

The study found that there is a correlation between platinum sensitivity, stage, and costs. Patients with limited-stage disease had higher costs compared to those with extensive-stage disease, primarily driven by radiation utilization. Among patients with extensive-stage disease, leading cost drivers included Part B chemotherapy, inpatient services, and other Part B services. Costs were higher for patients with platinum refractory SCLC compared to platinum sensitive SCLC, regardless of stage, with higher inpatient and Part B chemotherapy costs. Patients with platinum refractory extensive-stage disease had higher costs across all service categories, except for Part B radiation therapy.

The study concludes that patients with limited-stage disease and platinum refractory SCLC incur higher costs. Patients with platinum refractory extensive-stage disease experience the highest costs across nearly all service categories, particularly inpatient and Part B chemotherapy spending, resulting in higher overall costs than those with platinum sensitive disease.

It's important to note that the results of this study are based on the specific data analyzed and may differ with different datasets, inputs, time periods, and methodology. The study was presented at the IASLC 2022 World Conference on Lung Cancer.
