Pdf Summary
This document presents a study on the trends in patient characteristics and treatment patterns for adults diagnosed with Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) in the United States from 2013 to 2021. The study used data from electronic health records (EHR) to analyze the real-world treatment patterns.

The study found that there were no significant shifts in the demographic characteristics of patients diagnosed with SCLC between 2013-2017 and 2018-2021. The majority of patients were white, had a history of tobacco use, and were diagnosed with extensive stage disease. The use of platinum-based chemotherapy plus irinotecan/etoposide as the standard of care for first-line treatment of SCLC decreased from 96% to 59% among patients diagnosed in 2018-2021.

The study also noted the introduction of checkpoint inhibitors (CPIs) as a significant shift in the treatment landscape for SCLC. Four CPIs were recently approved for SCLC, and their use in combination with platinum-based chemotherapy or as monotherapy increased from 0% in 2013-2017 to 38% in 2018-2021.

The most common second-line regimen for SCLC patients diagnosed in 2013-2017 was topotecan monotherapy, but among patients diagnosed from 2018-2021, 43% received CPI-containing regimens and 14% received lurbinectedin monotherapy.

Overall, the study found that the share of SCLC patients initiating first-line treatment increased from 77% to 87% between 2013 and 2021. The use of CPI-containing regimens in both first-line and second-line treatment has increased over time.

This study provides valuable insights into the changing treatment patterns and trends in patient characteristics among adults diagnosed with SCLC in the US. Understanding these trends is important for improving outcomes for SCLC patients.
