Pdf Summary
Pulmonary carcinoids, which account for 1% of lung cancers, are typically treated with surgery. Different types of surgical resection can be performed, including radical lung resection and minimally invasive procedures. However, surgery may have an impact on patients' quality of life, due to decreased lung function and postoperative pain. This study aimed to compare the impact of different types of surgical resection on post-operative quality of life. It is the first study to measure the change in lung function and quality of life following surgical resection of carcinoid tumors.

The study included patients who underwent surgery for bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumors at King Hussein Cancer Center between August 2017 and March 2020. Data was collected on patient demographics, comorbidities, perioperative outcomes, and pathological results. The impact on quality of life was assessed using the Short-form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ) and the Activity of Daily Living (ADL) instrument. Pulmonary function tests were also conducted.

The results of the study showed that aggressive surgical resection did not significantly affect lung function or quality of life in terms of performance status and post-operative pain. The majority of patients were independent in their daily activities, and mild intermittent pain was reported by some patients.

Overall, the study suggests that aggressive surgical resection for pulmonary carcinoid tumors can be effective without significantly affecting quality of life. The findings support the use of surgery as the gold standard treatment for this type of cancer. However, it is worth noting that the study was limited by its small sample size due to the rarity of this type of tumor. Further research with larger sample sizes may provide more conclusive results.
