Pdf Summary
A study conducted in India evaluated the use of serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) as a predictive marker in patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). CEA is a non-specific marker that is often elevated in various types of cancer. The study included 122 patients with metastatic NSCLC who had elevated CEA levels at baseline.

The results showed that patients who achieved an objective response to treatment had a significant reduction in CEA levels compared to pre-treatment levels. The area under the ROC curve for objective response was 0.872, indicating that CEA levels could effectively predict response to treatment. Patients who had a decline in CEA levels of 20% or more had a high rate of objective response, while those with a smaller decline had a lower rate of response.

On the other hand, patients who experienced disease progression had an increase in CEA levels relative to baseline. The area under the ROC curve for progressive disease was 0.944, suggesting that CEA levels could also predict disease progression. Patients with a 10% increase in CEA levels had a higher risk of progression.

The study concluded that changes in serum CEA levels can serve as a sensitive and specific marker of response to treatment as well as disease progression in patients with metastatic NSCLC who have elevated CEA levels at baseline. A decline in CEA levels of 20% or more was associated with longer progression-free survival and overall survival.

This study adds to the existing literature on the use of CEA as a prognostic and predictive marker in NSCLC. However, more research is needed to validate these findings and determine the role of CEA in guiding treatment decisions for patients with NSCLC.
