Pdf Summary
A study conducted in South Korea has identified serum reactive oxygen species modulator 1 (Romo1) as a potential predictive biomarker for lung adenocarcinoma. The researchers investigated the association between serum Romo1 levels and clinical outcomes in patients who underwent surgery for lung adenocarcinoma.

The study included patients from May 2016 to December 2017 at Kyung Hee University Hospital. Serum samples were collected prior to anesthesia induction and stored at -80°C. Romo1 levels were measured using an immunoassay kit, and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels were also measured.

The results showed that patients with high Romo1 levels had a significantly shorter median disease-free survival (DFS) compared to those with low Romo1 levels. Multivariate analysis confirmed that high Romo1 levels were independently associated with poor DFS. This suggests that elevated serum Romo1 levels are significantly associated with early recurrence in lung adenocarcinoma patients treated with surgery.

Previous studies have indicated that Romo1 overexpression in tumor tissue is associated with poor clinical outcomes in lung cancer treatment. However, this study focused on serum Romo1 levels, which may serve as a promising predictive biomarker for this patient population.

The researchers emphasize that current biomarkers for lung cancer, such as carcinoembryonic antigen and cytokeratin 19 fragments, are not highly reliable for predicting clinical outcomes. Therefore, the identification of Romo1 as a potential biomarker could provide valuable prognostic information for lung adenocarcinoma patients. Further research is needed to validate these findings and explore the full potential of serum Romo1 as a predictive biomarker in clinical practice.
