Pdf Summary
This document is a retrospective single-center review of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) conducted at the London Regional Cancer Program in Ontario, Canada. The objective of the study was to assess the association between serum tumor markers and radiographic and clinical outcomes in NSCLC patients.

The study included two cohorts of patients: one with paired baseline and follow-up tumor markers and CT scans, and an expanded cohort with baseline tumor markers only. Disease progression and response were assessed using RECIST 1.1 and iRECIST criteria.

The analysis found that the levels of three commonly available serum biomarkers (CEA, CA19-9, and CA-125) were significantly higher than baseline levels in patients who progressed, and significantly lower in patients who responded. Elevated CEA at baseline was associated with a higher likelihood of adenocarcinoma and stage IV diagnosis, and was inversely associated with stage III disease and squamous cell histology.

The study suggests that serum tumor markers could be used as a surrogate for radiographic assessment in NSCLC patients. The authors recommend further exploration of which patient populations and treatment types may benefit from tumor marker surveillance.

It is worth noting that there are limitations to the study, such as its retrospective nature and the inclusion of a single-center population. Future research should also consider expanding the tumor marker panel to include other biomarkers and evaluating their association with treatment response.

The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of the clinical course of NSCLC and could potentially guide diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis decisions.
