Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate the effect of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene polymorphisms on the clinical outcome of patients with lung cancer. The researchers identified two VEGFA gene polymorphisms in a cohort of 50 lung cancer patients using Sanger sequencing. These polymorphisms are known to result in a different expression of the VEGF protein in cancer cells, which can affect disease prognosis.

The results showed that the two VEGFA gene polymorphisms were present in the promoter region of the gene, but they did not show any association with clinicopathological features of lung cancer patients. It is unclear at this stage how these functional polymorphisms contribute to the prognosis of lung cancer in the Moroccan population. The researchers are currently conducting a gene expression study to evaluate the expression level of VEGFA and its association with these polymorphisms in lung cancer patients. This will help in improving the management of lung cancer.

Additionally, the study found high frequencies of the -460 T/C and -2578 C/A polymorphisms in patients with adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, respectively. The majority of patients with these polymorphisms were diagnosed at stage I of the disease. However, there was no significant correlation between the different genotypes and clinicopathological parameters.

Overall, this study suggests that VEGF gene polymorphisms may play a role in the development and progression of lung cancer. Further research is needed to understand the specific impact of these polymorphisms on the disease prognosis and to potentially develop targeted therapies based on these findings.
