This study investigated the side effects of the chemotherapy drug Docetaxel (DTX) on the lung and heart tissue of rats. The drug was administered to the rats at two different doses and the animals were sacrificed at different time points. The lung and heart tissue samples were taken and examined for any pathological changes.<br /><br />In the examination of the heart tissue, necrosis and regeneration were observed in some samples, along with inflammatory cell infiltration. These findings were more frequent in the group that received the higher dose of DTX. In the examination of the lung tissue, enlargement of the interstitium, interstitial pneumonia-like appearance, focal foci of inflammation, hyperemia, hemorrhage, and fibrosis were observed. Pulmonary fibrosis was more common in the group that received the higher dose of DTX. <br /><br />Based on these findings, the study suggests that DTX has toxic effects on both the lung and cardiac tissues at both low and high doses. It emphasizes the importance of healthcare professionals being aware of the early signs of adverse effects on the lung in cancer patients receiving DTX. <br /><br />The introduction of the study explains that DTX is widely used in the treatment of various solid tumors, but it can have toxic effects on the lung. The main mechanisms of its antineoplastic effect are inhibition of microtubular depolymerization and attenuation of the effects of certain genes. Additionally, DTX may cause lung damage through cytotoxic T-cell proliferation or direct pulmonary damage through reactive oxygen metabolites. <br /><br />Overall, this study highlights the potential side effects of DTX on the lung and heart tissues and emphasizes the need for caution when using this drug in cancer patients.
