Pdf Summary
Clinical trial enrollment for oncological studies nationwide is low, particularly among underrepresented groups. To address this issue, the authors examined the clinical trial enrollment success at the Thoracic Oncology Clinic (TOC) at UI Health, where the majority of patients served are underrepresented minorities.

Data from 259 patients newly diagnosed with lung cancer or with a recurrence between 2021-2023 were analyzed. Out of these patients, 44% had a clinical trial available and 60% of them enrolled onto a trial. Reasons for non-enrollment included not meeting medical criteria and patient refusal.

The overall clinical trial enrollment rate at TOC was 26%. Notably, the enrollment rate for underrepresented patients with lung cancer exceeded the national average. Of those who enrolled, 60% were Black, 31% were White (including Hispanic and non-Hispanic), and 9% were Asian.

The significantly higher clinical trial enrollment at TOC suggests the effectiveness of their strategies and approaches. Further research will explore the reasons behind this success, potentially leading to the development of interventional tools for improving clinical trial participation at other sites.

Overall, this study highlights the importance of ensuring adequate representation in clinical trials and the need for access to trials for all patients. The findings at TOC demonstrate positive progress in this regard and serve as a model for improving clinical trial enrollment in lung cancer patients, particularly those from underrepresented groups.
