Pdf Summary
A retrospective cohort study was conducted to analyze the treatment patterns and healthcare resource utilization of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients in Puerto Rico. The study utilized the Puerto Rico Central Cancer Registry Health Insurance Linkage Database and included adult patients with a confirmed diagnosis of NSCLC between 2012 and 2016.

The study found that a significant number of patients were diagnosed at stage III or higher and received platinum-based systemic therapy as their first-line treatment (1LT). The most prevalent histology group was non-squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The majority of patients received systemic therapy, with platinum-based combinations being the most common 1LT.

In terms of healthcare resource utilization, patients had an average of 4.7 emergency room visits, nearly 6 hospitalizations, and 22.4 outpatient visits annually. The frequency of PET scans, ultrasounds, CT scans, and MRIs varied among patients.

This study provides important information about the treatment patterns and healthcare resource utilization of NSCLC patients in Puerto Rico. It highlights the need for further research to investigate treatment patterns beyond the first-line therapy and to gain a comprehensive understanding of optimal care interventions and factors associated with early NSCLC diagnosis in Puerto Rico.

The study was supported by the National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and by Merck & Co., Inc.
