Pdf Summary
Researchers conducted a retrospective, observational study to examine the real-world demographics, clinical characteristics, treatment patterns, and clinical outcomes of US patients with limited-stage small cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC). The study included 1552 patients diagnosed with LS-SCLC from January 2015 to December 2020. The primary objectives were to describe the demographics, clinical characteristics, and treatment patterns, while the secondary endpoint was to assess overall survival (OS) by stage and treatment pattern.

The results showed that the median age of the patients was 67 years, with 57.3% being female and 74.9% being White. Almost all patients (99.1%) were former or current smokers. The majority of patients (48.6%) had Stage III disease, and 29.2% had an unknown stage. Most patients (73.6%) received chemoradiotherapy (CRT), while a smaller percentage had surgery (7.3%), chemotherapy-only (9.7%), or radiotherapy-only (6.4%). The most common chemotherapy regimen was platinum-etoposide (carboplatin or cisplatin). Additionally, 38.5% of patients received prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI).

The median OS for all patients was 20.3 months, with a 5-year OS of 21.7%. Patients with more advanced disease stages had shorter OS. Those who underwent surgery had the longest OS, while those who received chemotherapy-only had the shortest OS.

The study concluded that the patient characteristics were consistent with the known epidemiology of LS-SCLC. The majority of patients received the recommended treatment of chemoradiotherapy, but less than half received prophylactic cranial irradiation. The survival outcomes with established treatment approaches highlight a need for new therapeutic strategies in LS-SCLC.

This study provides valuable insights into the real-world treatment patterns and outcomes for US patients with limited-stage small cell lung cancer, which can help inform future treatment strategies for this patient population.
