A trial is currently underway at Mayo Clinic Rochester to assess the effectiveness of a Shared Decision-Making (SDM) Encounter Tool, called 'NSCLC Choice,' for the adjuvant treatment of lung cancer. Adjuvant therapy, which includes chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy, has been shown to reduce the recurrence of lung cancer. However, the decision to proceed with adjuvant therapy depends on the values and preferences of individual patients.<br /><br />The 'NSCLC Choice' tool aims to help physicians have informed discussions with patients about the potential benefits, risks, and inconveniences of different treatment options. The trial is evaluating the effectiveness of this tool compared to standard care in improving the quality of SDM.<br /><br />Adult patients with stage 1B NSCLC who are eligible for adjuvant treatment are being enrolled in the trial. In-person and virtual encounters are eligible for participation. The encounters are video and/or audio recorded with the consent of both the clinician and the patient.<br /><br />The primary outcome of the trial is to assess the quality of the SDM process, which will be measured using two scales: SDMQ-9 and OPTION12. Additional assessments include knowledge transfer, satisfaction, decisional conflict scale, and the treatment decision made by the patient.<br /><br />The trial has a sample size of 100 patients and will follow the intention-to-treat principle for analysis. The analysis will include comparisons between arms of clusters at the clinician level using adjusted t-tests and chi-square tests.<br /><br />The trial has received IRB approval and is currently open for enrollment.
