Pdf Summary
This study aimed to assess the agreement between low-dose CT (LDCT) and mammography findings in determining breast density, as well as evaluate how often supplemental imaging is performed for women with dense breasts. The participants were women who underwent LDCT as part of a lung cancer screening program. Out of 88 participants with dense breasts on LDCT, 60 had mammograms available for comparison. In 87% of cases, the determination of dense breasts was consistent between mammography and LDCT. The remaining 13% of cases had mammograms interpreted as scattered areas of fibroglandular density, which were confirmed to not be dense upon further review.

Only 36% of participants with dense breasts underwent supplemental breast imaging. Even among those with concordant findings between mammography and LDCT, only 33% received supplemental imaging. These findings highlight the need to educate women and healthcare providers about breast screening management protocols and the importance of supplemental testing for women with dense breasts.

The study suggests that LDCT can provide highly correlated findings with mammography in determining breast density. This provides an opportunity to inform women and their healthcare providers of their results and the need for supplemental testing. The identification of dense breasts is important as it can mask underlying disease and is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Therefore, encouraging women with dense breasts to undergo supplemental testing is crucial in order to improve early detection and reduce the risk of delayed diagnoses.

In conclusion, there is a high level of agreement between LDCT and mammography in determining breast density. However, there is a low rate of utilization of supplemental imaging among women with dense breasts. This suggests the need for further education and encouragement to ensure that women with dense breasts receive appropriate follow-up testing.
