This study evaluated the quality of smoking cessation counseling provided by artificial intelligence voice assistants (VAs). Four commonly used voice assistants (Siri on iPhone and MacBook Pro, Alexa on Echo, and Google Assistant on Google Home) and one web-based AI (Chat GPT) were queried on smoking cessation using ten voice prompts. <br /><br />The results showed that out of 50 responses, 37 were related to smoking cessation, 4 mentioned a quitline, and 13 were unrelated to smoking cessation. Of the responses unrelated to smoking cessation, some VAs acknowledged that they did not recognize the answer, while others were entirely unrelated. <br /><br />The study concluded that a significant percentage of the queries provided by VAs were unhelpful for users interested in smoking cessation. This represents a missed opportunity to assist motivated users in finding helpful resources and overcoming barriers to seeking care. <br /><br />The authors suggest that VAs could improve the dissemination of smoking cessation resources by recognizing common phrases users may use and limiting irrelevant responses. They also recommend promoting the use of smoking cessation quitlines more frequently to connect users to evidence-based resources. Furthermore, the technology industry could collaborate with healthcare systems to create concise and standardized responses for VAs regarding smoking cessation. <br /><br />Overall, this study highlights the need for improvements in the quality of smoking cessation counseling provided by VAs and emphasizes the potential of VAs to assist users in accessing appropriate resources for quitting smoking.
