Pdf Summary
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, and the stage at diagnosis greatly affects survival rates. Patients with localized lung cancer have a better prognosis than those with more advanced stages. Safety-net hospitals, which provide care to disadvantaged patients, play a crucial role in treating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, there is limited research on outcomes for this specific patient population.

The goal of this study was to assess the outcomes of early-stage NSCLC patients, specifically those with stage 0 and stage 1, and evaluate the impact of Low Dose Computerized Tomography (LDCT) screenings. The researchers conducted a retrospective chart review of NSCLC patients diagnosed between 2013 and 2021 at a safety-net hospital.

The analysis included 123 patients, with 104 having stage 1 and 19 having stage 0 NSCLC. The data collected included demographics, treatment details, vital status, cause of death, and LDCT status. The researchers used Kaplan Meier analysis, log-rank tests, and Cox-proportional hazards models to assess survival probabilities.

The results showed that patients treated with surgery for early-stage NSCLC at the safety-net hospital had similar survival rates to the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database. However, over a quarter of patients did not receive treatment, mostly due to comorbidities. LDCT was widely used for at-risk populations.

The study also found that surgery had a higher survival rate compared to radiation treatment. LDCT screenings diagnosed 20 early-stage cancers with higher survival probabilities, although the results did not reach statistical significance.

In conclusion, this study provides important insights into the outcomes of early-stage NSCLC patients at a safety-net hospital. It highlights the need for equitable access to LDCT screenings and emphasizes the importance of comprehensive care for disadvantaged populations. Further research is needed to continue studying outcomes for safety-net hospital patients with NSCLC.
