The study presented in the research poster aims to increase the promotion of LDCT screening and blood biomarker research in minority communities in Northern Illinois in order to improve early detection of lung cancer. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., and the incidence rate in Winnebago County, Illinois is higher than the national average. The study employed various measures to promote LDCT screening and blood biomarkers, including hosting booths at community events and conducting informational lectures. The study collected data on LDCT screenings and the detection of lung cancer cases in Winnebago County hospitals from June 2015 to December 2022. The results showed that the percentage of African Americans screened for lung cancer has almost doubled compared to previous years, and a significant number of early-stage cases were identified through LDCT screening. Community outreach efforts successfully reached a diverse range of ethnic groups, with a focus on Hispanic and African American communities. However, there is a need for improved outreach in Ogle and Stephenson Counties. Since 2015, a total of 6,901 Illinois residents have been screened for lung cancer. The results suggest that increasing promotion of LDCT screening and blood biomarker research in minority communities can lead to improved early detection of lung cancer. The study was supported by a grant and received contributions from various individuals and organizations.
