Pdf Summary
This study examines the disparities in lung cancer screening uptake in the state of Indiana. Lung cancer is the leading cause of death in Indiana residents, primarily due to high smoking prevalence. The study utilized data from the Indiana University Health system and focused on patients eligible for lung cancer screening according to guidelines set by the United States Preventive Services Task Force. The study assessed variables such as age, gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, educational status, and geographic demographics.

Among the 1175 eligible patients, only 39 (3.3%) underwent lung cancer screening, while 1136 (96.6%) declined the opportunity. Those who underwent screening had a median age of 60.4 and were predominantly from the upper and middle socioeconomic classes. Gender distribution was almost even, and all screened patients were Caucasian and resided in urban areas. Moreover, all screened patients had college-level education.

In contrast, the non-screened group had a higher median age of 69.3 and consisted of patients from lower socioeconomic classes. Gender distribution favored males, and racial distribution showed a higher proportion of Caucasians, followed by African Americans and Hispanics. Demographically, most non-screened patients resided in rural areas, and educational attainment varied.

These findings highlight significant disparities in lung cancer screening uptake in Indiana. Adults residing in rural areas, particularly those with lower socioeconomic status and without a college education, had significantly lower rates of screening. The eligible population for screening appears to be underserved, calling for targeted interventions to improve screening uptake and address the disparities.

Overall, this study emphasizes the need to bridge the gap in lung cancer screening utilization and enhance access to screening for high-risk populations in Indiana.
