Pdf Summary
This study aimed to understand the perspectives of patients with anaplastic lymphoma kinase non-small cell lung cancer (ALK NSCLC) regarding their health-related quality of life (HRQoL), treatment, impact of symptoms on daily life, and communication with care teams. The study utilized data from the Lung Cancer Registry from GO2 for Lung Cancer, which is an online collection of surveys for patients with lung cancer. The surveys assess treatment, symptoms, side effects, HRQoL using the EORTC QLQ-C30/LC29 questionnaire, and other attributes. The study included patients aged 18 years and older with self-reported ALK NSCLC in the US who completed the patient survey.

Key findings from the study include:

- All patients reported feeling comfortable speaking honestly with their care teams, and all patients reported that their care teams showed interest in their HRQoL.
- Patient-reported daily functioning, particularly physical functioning, correlated with HRQoL.
- HRQoL (Global Health Status QoL) correlated with comfort in communicating with care teams and care team interest in HRQoL.
- Results highlight the importance of communication between patients with ALK NSCLC and care teams, emphasizing the need for patient-provider trust and honest communication.

The study has some limitations, including a small, self-selected sample that may not be representative of the overall ALK NSCLC population. The results are based on self-reported answers, which may be subject to recall bias. Additionally, the survey questions in the ALK module were adapted from existing scales but were not validated in their current form.

In conclusion, this study provides insights into the perspectives of patients with ALK NSCLC regarding HRQoL, treatment, symptom impact on daily life, and communication with care teams. The findings underscore the importance of effective communication and patient-centered care in improving HRQoL for patients with ALK NSCLC. Further research is needed to explore factors that facilitate patient-provider trust and honest communication.
