Pdf Summary
This study focused on implementing the 4R Oncology model, which aims to improve patient self-management and access to guideline-based care for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The study surveyed 200 NSCLC patients from 9 different cancer centers before implementing the 4R model.

The results showed that a significant number of patients were unaware of their stage or goal of care. Among the patients surveyed, 42% reported having stage IV cancer, 37% reported stages I-III, and 21% were unsure. The goal of care also varied, with 43% seeking cure, 38% seeking non-curative care, and 20% unsure. Concerningly, 18% of patients had inconsistent goals of care compared to their stages.

The study also found that patients with early-stage cancer were referred to smoking-cessation, primary/chronic care, and nutrition services at a higher rate than stage IV patients. However, stage IV patients were referred at a higher rate for emotional and practical support. The study identified a need for improvements in the delivery of guideline-based care, as less than half of the patients were referred to practical, nutrition, or emotional support services.

To address these gaps, the cancer centers are planning to implement the 4R Oncology Model and Care Sequences, which involve personalized care plans based on guidelines and literature. These care plans will be updated throughout the care continuum and encompass various specialties. The study highlighted the need for better delivery of guideline-based care and the importance of implementing the 4R model to improve patient outcomes in NSCLC.
