Pdf Summary
This study aimed to describe the clinicopathologic profile of Filipino patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation positive advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in a tertiary hospital. The study found that the profile of patients with EGFR mutations was consistent with previous studies, characterized by being females, never smokers, and having adenocarcinoma. The most common types of EGFR mutations were exon 19 deletion and exon 21 L858R, which align with established studies.

Interestingly, the study also found that performance status and prior treatment were associated with the presence of EGFR mutation, which had not been observed in previous studies. The study acknowledged that the limited sample size could be improved by extending the study duration and including subjects from more institutions.

The clinicopathologic profile of Filipino patients with EGFR mutation positive advanced NSCLC was further described, including clinical characteristics such as age, sex, comorbidities, prior treatment, tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) used, family history of cancer, smoking history, and outcome. The pathologic characteristics examined included histology, cellular differentiation, tumor location and size, type of EGFR mutation test, and type of mutation detected.

The analysis of the association between clinicopathologic features and EGFR mutation status showed that EGFR positive NSCLC patients had a mean age of 60.7 years, with a higher proportion of females and good performance status. Most patients were never smokers and had comorbidities. The majority had not received any prior treatment, and gefitinib was the most commonly used TKI. The median overall survival was 10 months.

In terms of pathologic characteristics, adenocarcinoma was the most common histology, with right-sided tumors predominantly located in the upper lungs. The tumor size ranged between 3cm and 7cm, and tissue samples were commonly used in testing. Exon 19 mutation was the most frequently detected type of mutation.

The study also found significant associations between EGFR mutation status and sex, smoking history, performance status, and prior treatment. The results suggest that the clinicopathologic profile of Filipino patients with EGFR mutation positive advanced NSCLC is consistent with previous studies, but with some unique associations observed in this particular study.
