Pdf Summary
This document is a summary of a presentation given at the WCLC 2023 conference. The presentation is titled "Genomic Correlates with Ancestry in Lung Squamous Cell Carcinoma" and discusses the correlation between genomic factors and race/ancestry in lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

The study analyzes data from 501 lung SCC tumor samples in the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and examines clinical data, gene expression profiles, mutations, and copy number changes. The goal is to identify differential events between tumors from patients of European or African ancestry.

The results show that tumors from African patients have more frequent gain of chromosome arm 8q and/or the chr8q24 locus, where the oncogene MYC and its enhancers are located. This indicates a role for the MYC pathway in differential cancer progression. Furthermore, expression of MYC targets is significantly increased in African samples, suggesting a correlation between MYC activity and decreased immune infiltration and gene signaling. Patients with African ancestry are also more likely to have decreased immune infiltrate and pathway activity.

The findings of this study align with observations in prostate cancer and suggest that MYC enhancer amplification may be correlated with African ancestry in lung SCC. The researchers note that further studies and diverse sampling of cancer patient populations are needed to validate these differences and determine patient-specific treatment modalities.

This research sheds light on the genetic factors that may contribute to disparities in lung SCC outcomes among different racial and ethnic groups. Understanding these genomic correlates with ancestry can potentially aid in developing targeted treatments and improving survival rates for all patients.
