Pdf Summary
This study aimed to compare the functional characteristics of a Filipino/Asian patient-derived lung adenocarcinoma cell line (GL01) with the widely used A549 cell line. Lung adenocarcinoma is a subtype of lung cancer that accounts for 40% of all cases. The researchers conducted cell propagation, functional assays, and data analysis to determine the differential anticancer compound response of GL01 and A549 cells.

The results showed that GL01 and A549 cells propagated in the same culture conditions had similar morphology and doubling time in culture. However, the MTT cell viability assay revealed differential viability response between the two cell lines. GL01 cells showed lower viability against the Guyabano EtOAc (GE) treatment, while A549 cells had lower viability against 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in most concentrations. In the wound healing assay, GE extracts inhibited cell migration more in GL01 cells compared to A549 cells. These results indicated that there is a differential anticancer compound response in the lung adenocarcinoma cell lines.

In conclusion, the developed GL01 cell line displayed comparable morphology and growth kinetics to the A549 cell line. However, it exhibited different cell viability and migration responses to various treatments, suggesting that lung adenocarcinoma cells of different origins may have variable phenotypes. The researchers recommend further molecular and functional characterization of GL01 cells and potential commercialization of the developed Asian-derived lung adenocarcinoma cell line.

This research was funded by the Philippine Commission on Higher Education (CHED) through the Philippine-California Advanced Research Institute (PCARI-IHITM 2017-18) grant. The researchers also acknowledged support from the Molecular Diagnostics and Cellular Therapeutics Laboratory (MDCTL), Lung Center of the Philippines, and the Molecular Diagnostics and Multi-omics Laboratory (MDML), Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, UP College of Medicine.
