Researchers in China have developed a combined imaging and electrical impedance analysis (EIA) technology to improve the malignancy risk stratification for early-stage lung cancers in lung nodules. The traditional diagnostic tool for lung cancer screening, computed tomography (CT), has significantly reduced mortality rates in high-risk populations. However, there is a need for a non-invasive and objective diagnostic tool that can be used alongside CT for evaluating early cancer risks in lung lesions. The ProLung non-invasive test applies EIA by measuring the resistive changes within the extracellular matrix and lymph system driven by the presence of cancer in the body. In a study involving 287 patients with CT-detected pulmonary lesions, the researchers evaluated the diagnostic efficacy of combining CT imaging and ProLung EIA technologies. The nodules were classified as CT-positive or CT-negative based on radiological features. The ProLung non-invasive test involved measuring bioimpedance at various locations on the skin and generating low or high malignancy risk categories based on a formulated algorithm composite score. The obtained categories from both CT and ProLung were compared with the final diagnosis. The results showed that the combination of CT and ProLung significantly reduced the missed diagnosis rate compared to using either technology alone. The combined approach also achieved higher diagnostic sensitivities for early-stage lung cancers. The researchers concluded that the integration of CT and ProLung assessments can be effective in non-invasively screening and detecting early cancer risks in lung nodules, leading to better medical decisions and reduced mortality rates for lung cancer patients.
