This study aims to explore the potential of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath as a biomarker for early diagnosis of lung cancer in high-risk individuals. The participants in this study are selected based on their smoking habits and undergo low dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening. Breath analysis is being used to evaluate the VOCs pattern in the participants as a potential biological biomarker for lung cancer. <br /><br />VOCs in exhaled breath can provide information about the metabolic and health status of an individual as they reflect the volatile composition of the bloodstream and airways. Various cellular functions, including energy metabolism and oxidative stress, are known to be linked to VOC formation.<br /><br />The study has enrolled a total of 84 participants who have undergone breath analysis and LDCT so far. Breath samples are collected using an automated sampling system, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry is used to analyze the samples. The study is ongoing and plans to include at least 200 participants.<br /><br />The determination of VOCs in exhaled breath holds potential as a biomarker for lung cancer, although the current techniques used need to be validated. Breath analysis is non-invasive and cost-effective, making it a potentially valuable tool to integrate with LDCT screening programs for early diagnosis and management of lung cancer nodules.
