This study focuses on evaluating the impact of a nurse practitioner-led lung cancer screening (LCS) program in an urban, low-income, and diverse population in Chicago. The program followed the United States Preventive Services Task Force and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid screening guidelines, using low-dose CT (LDCT) scans. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of the LCS program in detecting early-stage lung cancer and reducing mortality rates.<br /><br />The retrospective review analyzed data from 2044 individuals who entered the LCS program between March 2015 and April 2023. Of these, 59 individuals were diagnosed with lung cancer, resulting in a detection rate of 2.9%. The racial demographics of the cohort were predominantly Black/African American (61%), followed by White (16%), Hispanic (11%), Asian (4%), and other/unknown (7%).<br /><br />The results showed that 68% of the diagnosed lung cancer cases were in early stages (stage I or II), and no stage IV lung cancers were detected after the baseline scan. The study also observed a decrease in the percentage of stage IV lung cancers diagnosed each year, indicating a potential positive effect of the LCS program on early detection and improved survival.<br /><br />The findings suggest that the nurse practitioner-led LCS program in this urban population has shown promising results in terms of lung cancer detection and early-stage identification. The program may contribute to improved survival rates and reduced mortality in this high-risk community. These results highlight the importance of implementing lung cancer screening programs, particularly in disadvantaged and diverse populations, to address health disparities and improve outcomes in lung cancer management.<br /><br />Overall, this study demonstrates the potential impact of an urban-based LCS program in early lung cancer detection and emphasizes the need for continued efforts in implementing such programs to address health disparities and improve outcomes in high-risk populations.
