Pdf Summary
The study presented in this session focuses on the outcomes of Lehigh Valley Health Network's (LVHN) multi-disciplinary lung cancer screening program. The researchers highlight the importance of early detection and collaboration between different medical professionals in effectively diagnosing lung cancer. The LVHN has actively promoted low-dose CT lung cancer screening since 2006, and their screening program has been successful in identifying patients eligible for screening. Over the last five years, they have seen a 12% increase in stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients and an 8% decrease in stage IV patients.

For this study, the researchers reviewed 5,311 screening lung CT scans performed between December 2021 and January 2023. Out of these scans, 221 (4.2%) were graded Lung-RADS 4, indicating a higher likelihood of malignancy. These scans were further evaluated in the thoracic multidisciplinary clinic (MDC). Among the 221 charts, 212 met the parameters, with nine charts being excluded for various reasons. Of the 177 patients reviewed in the MDC, 112 underwent PET-CT scans, and 74 of them had biopsies, resulting in the diagnosis of 48 malignancies.

The researchers found that the lung cancers identified were primarily in stage I, II, III, and IV. The patients were treated with surgical resection, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy/immunotherapy based on their specific condition. The remaining patients continue to be followed with longitudinal scans.

The study concludes that increased access to low-dose lung cancer CT screening has played a significant role in reducing NSCLC mortality. The multi-disciplinary approach adopted by LVHN in evaluating and treating lung cancer has also been beneficial. This research demonstrates the success rate of LVHN's screening program and the value of the MDC approach in lung cancer screening.
