Pdf Summary
This study analyzes the impact of a multi-disciplinary lung nodule program in a tertiary care academic center in the United States. The program was implemented to complement lung cancer screening initiatives by improving the identification, diagnosis, and intervention for lung nodules. The program involved thoracic surgery, pulmonology, primary care, oncology, and radiology.

The researchers collected deidentified patient information from 2018 to 2022, including demographics, imaging follow-up, diagnoses, and interventions. A total of 591 low-dose CT scans were performed for 475 patients. After the establishment of the lung nodule clinic, 62% of patients completed CT scans. Among them, 8% had nodules measuring 7mm or larger. The majority of these patients (78%) had nodules found after the lung nodule program was established.

Out of the patients with nodules measuring 7mm or larger, 62% were referred to the lung nodule clinic and enrolled in the program. The interventions received by these patients included follow-up CT scans, PET scans, endobronchial ultrasound, flexible bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage, and biopsies.

Additionally, 1% of the screened patients were diagnosed with lung cancer, with three patients having adenocarcinoma and one patient having squamous cell carcinoma. Three patients underwent lobectomies, while one received systemic therapy.

Overall, the study demonstrates that the implementation of a dedicated lung nodule program in an academic center led to improved imaging follow-up and prompt intervention and diagnosis of early-stage lung cancer. The findings highlight the benefits of detecting early-stage lung cancer through a multi-disciplinary approach.
