Pdf Summary
This study aimed to analyze the impact of a new lung nodule program, specifically the addition of a thoracic surgical service and a lung nodule clinic, on lung cancer screening and detection at a tertiary care academic center in the United States. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women in the US, and low-dose CT scans have been found to improve detection and decrease mortality rates. However, the percentage of high-risk individuals receiving these scans is still low.

The researchers collected data from the University of California, Irvine Lung Cancer Screening Initiative from January 2018 to December 2022. They divided patients into two groups: before the establishment of the lung nodule clinic (2018-2020) and after (2020-2022). They found that the addition of the lung nodule clinic and thoracic surgery service led to improved outcomes.

Before the lung nodule clinic was established, 475 patients were screened, with 8 nodules detected and no lung cancer cases. After the establishment of the clinic, 295 patients were screened, with 29 nodules detected and 4 cases of lung cancer. Three patients underwent minimally invasive lobectomies, while one underwent systemic therapy. The results suggest that the multi-disciplinary approach of the lung nodule program improves follow-up, diagnosis, and intervention in lung cancer treatment.

Overall, this study highlights the importance of a dedicated lung nodule program in improving the detection and treatment of lung cancer. However, further efforts are needed to increase the number of high-risk individuals screened for lung cancer at the institution.
