EP04.04. Relevance of AI (qCT ) In Automated Progression Monitoring of Pulmonary Nodules in Follow-up Lung CT Scans - PDF(Slides)

This study focuses on the relevance of artificial intelligence (AI) in the automated progression monitoring of pulmonary nodules in follow-up lung computed tomography (CT) scans. Early detection of lung cancer requires tracking of lung nodules, and automated monitoring of nodule progression can improve early detection. The study used low dose CT scans from the National Lung Screening Trial dataset to assess the potential of AI in tracking nodules identified by clinicians. <br /><br />The methodology involved the selection and annotation of random high-risk current and former smoker CT scans from the dataset. A radiologist with five years of experience identified and annotated nodule boundaries in all slices. A deterministic algorithm was used for volume calculation, and object detection-based deep learning was used for nodule segmentation. Image registration was performed to align two consecutive CT scans, and overlapping nodules were considered the same nodule.<br /><br />The results showed that out of 139 nodules in two subsequent screenings, 71% were accurately tracked in all follow-ups. In the first follow-up, 74% of the nodules were accurately tracked. Changes in nodule volume were also observed, with 32.6% showing enlargement and 20.4% showing shrinkage.<br /><br />Overall, the study concluded that AI can improve the accuracy of nodule tracking on low dose CT scans, facilitate nodule progression monitoring for radiologists, enhance physician efficiency in identifying and managing nodules, contribute to early lung cancer diagnosis, and potentially reduce mortality and morbidity. Additionally, AI can optimize resources by reducing the time and effort required for radiologist lung cancer screening.
