Pdf Summary
This document is an abstract for a presentation at the WCLC 2023 conference. The presentation discusses the efficiency of using a machine learning model called Lungflag compared to opportunistic selection in a theoretical East Asian lung cancer screening program.

The introduction highlights that Asia has the highest incidence of lung cancer and mortality in the world, and the incidence of lung cancer among non-smokers in East Asia is higher than in Europe and North America. The authors suggest that including never-smokers in population-based screening algorithms could be beneficial.

The methods section explains that the authors compared two methods for screening: the Lungflag machine learning algorithm and opportunistic selection. A 5-year simulation was conducted with 1,000,000 eligible adults, considering three groups based on smoking status: high-risk smokers, ever-smokers not meeting certain criteria, and never smokers. The two methods were compared in terms of the number of lung cancer cases and the distribution of early vs. late-stage cancer.

The results section shows that the Lungflag model flagged 4,188 lung cancers, with 1,967 of them in early stages, compared to 750 lung cancers (233 in early stages) by random selection. The model demonstrated a higher odds ratio compared to opportunistic selection in ever-smokers and never-smokers, suggesting it can be used as a pre-screening tool. Additionally, the model showed increased performance in detecting earlier-stage cancers.

In conclusion, the authors found that the Lungflag machine learning model had improved efficiency compared to opportunistic selection in a theoretical East Asian lung cancer screening program. The model was effective in identifying elevated risk populations and detecting earlier-stage cancers.
