A pilot intervention was conducted to improve lung cancer screening for women undergoing breast screening mammography. The study found that women who are eligible for lung cancer screening have similar rates of breast cancer screening as those who are not eligible, suggesting that the mammography screening could be used as an opportunity to improve lung cancer screening uptake. The intervention involved combining patient self-referral with eligibility identification by providers. <br /><br />The results showed that the self-referral aspect of the intervention did not lead to significant increases in lung cancer screening uptake. However, patients who were individually identified for lung cancer screening during their mammography screening were more responsive to learning about dual screening. <br /><br />The study concludes that integrating lung cancer screening identification and referral into the mammography screening process shows great promise.
