Pdf Summary
The study explored the public perception of early detection methods and symptoms of lung cancer, focusing on the impact of these perceptions on participation in cancer screening. Thirteen participants who had never been diagnosed with cancer were interviewed in focus groups. The results showed that most participants had low sensitivity to early detection of lung cancer but perceived screening in the country as good. The symptoms related to lung cancer mentioned by the participants included cough, fatigue, breathlessness, and phlegm production. The reasons for participating in cancer screening included information sharing from nonprofessional sources, family history of cancer, acquaintances diagnosed with cancer, and expert opinion from the mass media. Barrier factors for early detection of cancer were also identified, including inconvenience in using hospital services, economic factors, lack of knowledge of early cancer symptoms, anxiety-related symptom ignoring, and reassurance of current health status being cancer-free. Additionally, the participants had limited knowledge of cancer early detection signs that warrant regular check-ups. The study concluded that social-contextual factors such as individual experience, interpersonal information sharing, health system, and public health policy influence lung cancer screening participation and appropriate care for cancer symptoms. The researchers emphasized the need for continuous efforts to provide appropriate information to increase public awareness of lung cancer and its risks, especially in relation to smoking.
