Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. The data of 1606 patients who underwent surgery for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) between 1996 and 2022 were analyzed. The patients were divided into two groups: before and after COVID-19. The surgical and oncological results were compared between the groups.

The results showed that there was no increase in mortality and morbidity after anatomical resections for lung cancer during the pandemic period. However, COVID-19 infection led to a significant increase in the rate of early diagnosis. In group 1 (pre-pandemic), most patients underwent direct surgery (58.2%), while in group 2 (pandemic period), surgery was performed when a nodule was detected in Thorax CT due to COVID-19/pneumonia. The rates of segmentectomy, lobectomy, and pneumonectomy were similar in both groups, but there was a higher percentage of patients in pathological stage I in group 2. Postoperative mortality and complications were also similar between the groups.

This study highlights the importance of lung cancer radiological screening, as COVID-19 infection led to an increased rate of early diagnosis. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the study shows that surgical outcomes for lung cancer patients remained stable. This information can help inform healthcare providers about the impact of the pandemic on lung cancer diagnosis and treatment, and the need for continued efforts in lung cancer screening.
