Pdf Summary
This study conducted by researchers at the Bursa Uludag University Faculty of Medicine aimed to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of lung cancer. The study analyzed data from 1605 patients who underwent lung cancer surgery between 1996 and 2022, dividing them into two groups: before and after the pandemic.

The study found that during the pandemic period, there was an increase in the rate of early lung cancer diagnosis. In the group after the pandemic, 185 patients underwent surgery after a lung nodule was detected on a thorax CT performed due to COVID-19 or pneumonia. The researchers also noted that there was no increase in mortality and morbidity after anatomical resections for lung cancer during the pandemic.

The study also provided detailed information on the surgical procedures performed on the patients. In the pre-pandemic group, lobectomy was the most common procedure, with 1140 patients undergoing it. Pathological stage I patients accounted for 38.04% of this group. In the pandemic group, lobectomy was also the most common procedure, with 159 patients undergoing it. Pathological stage I patients accounted for 41.3% of this group.

The researchers presented a case study of a 37-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with lung cancer after a mass was detected in her lung during a CT scan performed after being infected with COVID-19. The patient underwent surgery without complications and was discharged on the third day.

In conclusion, the study found that while there was an increase in early lung cancer diagnosis during the pandemic, there was no increase in mortality and morbidity after surgery. These findings highlight the importance of lung cancer screening and suggest that the pandemic may have led to more timely diagnoses of lung cancer.
