Pdf Summary
A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of flexible bronchoscopy (FB) in elderly patients with suspected primary lung cancer. The study was carried out at the National Hospital Organization Kyoto Medical Center from April 2021 to March 2022.

A total of 141 patients who underwent FB for suspected primary lung cancer were included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups: elderly (75 years and older) and non-elderly (below 75 years). The detection rate and complications of FB were compared between the two groups.

The results showed that the detection rate of FB in elderly patients was similar to that in non-elderly patients, ranging from 56.3% to 59.7%. The most common indications for FB were nodal and mass lesions, which accounted for approximately 85% of all cases. Transbronchial biopsy was the most frequently used sampling technique.

There were no deaths reported in either group, and the frequency of complications, such as bleeding, hypoxia, pneumothorax, fever, pneumonia, and hypertension, was comparable between the two groups.

The study findings suggest that elderly patients can undergo FB for suspected lung cancer with similar detection rates and comparable risk of complications as non-elderly patients. This indicates that age should not be considered a hindrance when deciding to perform FB in elderly patients.

Having a definitive diagnosis through FB can provide elderly patients with more treatment opportunities. The study highlights the importance of implementing FB as a safe and effective diagnostic procedure for suspected primary lung cancer in elderly individuals.
