Pdf Summary
This presentation discusses lung cancer in patients with Combined Pulmonary Fibrosis and Emphysema (CPFE) syndrome. CPFE syndrome is characterized by upper lung predominant emphysema and lower lung predominant fibrosis, and all patients are smokers or ex-smokers, putting them at high risk for developing lung cancer. The study retrospectively reviewed the medical records of CPFE patients diagnosed with lung cancer from 2010 to 2016.

Out of a total of 18 CPFE cases, 4 male patients were diagnosed with lung cancer. The lung cancers were peripheral primary lung cancers, with 3 cases being squamous cell carcinoma and 1 case being small cell carcinoma. The patients with lung cancer had a higher unit pack-years (UPY) smoking value, lower pulmonary functional state, and higher values of pulmonary hypertension compared to other CPFE patients. Two patients with lung cancer in this study have died, and their mean survival time was 2 years.

The study concludes that lung cancer in CPFE syndrome represents a specific entity with a poor prognosis. It emphasizes the severe impact of tobacco-related diseases and suggests that CPFE may be an independent risk factor for lung cancer. However, the small number of patients in this study highlights the need for further research to confirm the relationship between CPFE and lung cancer.

Overall, this presentation highlights the importance of understanding the relationship between CPFE syndrome, smoking, and lung cancer. It provides insights into the prognosis and characteristics of lung cancer in CPFE patients, shedding light on a specific subgroup of lung cancer patients.
