Pdf Summary
This study analyzed 448 patients who underwent CT-guided transthoracic needle biopsy (TTNB) at Chungnam National University Hospital to identify predictive factors for hemoptysis following the procedure. Hemoptysis is a potentially life-threatening complication of TTNB that requires prompt intervention. The study recorded the occurrence and amount of hemoptysis as well as the presence of cough after the biopsy. The size of newly appearing lesions on post-procedure CT scans was also measured.

The results showed that hemoptysis occurred in 30.5% of the patients, with 16.2% having blood-tinged sputum and 13.4% experiencing self-limiting hemoptysis. Only 0.1% required interventions such as endotracheal intubation or bronchial artery embolization. Hemoptysis and cough after biopsy were significantly correlated, suggesting that the presence of cough can be used to predict hemoptysis. There was also a significant difference in the size of newly appearing lesions depending on the presence of hemoptysis.

The study concludes that physicians should closely monitor patients for the development of coughs after the biopsy to predict the occurrence of hemoptysis. Additionally, if new lesions around the biopsy site appear on post-procedure CT scans, clinicians should be aware of the possibility of hemoptysis, especially if the lesions are large. This information can help improve the timely management of hemoptysis following TTNB.

Keywords: Transthoracic needle biopsy, Hemoptysis, Cough

Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the predictive factors for hemoptysis after CT-guided TTNB, which can help healthcare professionals enhance patient care and safety during and after the procedure.
