Pdf Summary
The abstract discusses a knowledge-based database called Atlas that has been developed to support the analysis of biomarkers in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. The database integrates pathological, molecular, and clinical data from real-world national series of lung cancer patients in Italy. The purpose of the database is to provide a diagnostic tool for healthcare professionals involved in the analysis of actionable biomarkers in NSCLC patients. The database visualizes molecular data matched with clinical categories such as sex, age, smoking status, tumor histotype, and Programmed death ligand 1 expression, to improve the representation of real-world data.

The authors audited records from two participating institutions to validate the data collected in the database. In total, they collected and annotated 1082 molecular records from 1062 NSCLC patients between January 2019 and December 2020. The molecular records included mutations in genes such as EGFR, KRAS, BRAF, ALK, RET, ROS1, NTRK, and MET. The data also included information on clinical variables such as age, smoking status, histological type, and therapy.

The authors evaluated the molecular results in conjunction with the clinical variables and found that there were differences in mutation frequencies between different clinical categories. For example, certain mutations were more common in male patients, older patients, or patients with specific histological types. The data from patients receiving different types of therapy, such as target therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and chemo-immunotherapy, were also analyzed and archived in the database. Each mutation reported in the Atlas database was connected to indexed references and clinical trials.

In conclusion, the Biomarkers Atlas database provides a comprehensive collection of real-world data from NSCLC patients in Italy. The database allows for the visualization and analysis of biomarker data matched with clinical variables, which can aid in the development of personalized treatment approaches for NSCLC patients.
