EP06.05. Accuracy of Postoperative Thoracic Malignancy Diagnosis in National Respiratory Center Persahabatan Hospital - PDF(Abstract)

The study evaluated the accuracy of postoperative diagnosis of thoracic malignancies at the National Respiratory Center Persahabatan Hospital. Lung cancer is the most common type of thoracic malignancy, but it is often diagnosed at an advanced stage due to the absence of specific symptoms. The study aimed to determine the rate of underdiagnosis and the changes in diagnosis from preoperative to postoperative for cases undergoing thoracic surgery.<br /><br />The study included 46 cases of thoracotomy at the hospital, and it found that 19 of these cases (41.31%) were initially diagnosed as non-malignant but were later confirmed to be malignant after surgery. On the other hand, all cases initially diagnosed as malignant maintained their diagnosis after surgery, with 27 out of 46 cases (58.69%) having a confirmed therapeutic indication.<br /><br />Further analysis revealed that 11 out of 22 (50%) cases of lung adenocarcinoma had the same pathological result both before and after surgery. However, the remaining 11 cases showed changes in pathological results, with 5 cases becoming mediastinal tumors, 2 cases becoming germinal carcinoma (Yolk sack), and 4 cases becoming squamous cell carcinoma. One case of squamous cell carcinoma changed to neuroendocrine cancer. The post-thoracotomy diagnosis confirmed the presence of malignancy, including lung adenocarcinoma, neuroendocrine cancer, and squamous cell carcinoma.<br /><br />The study concluded that thoracotomy should be performed when other diagnostic procedures fail to provide a definitive diagnosis in cases of suspected malignancy. Performing thoracotomy earlier allows for immediate treatment, resulting in a better prognosis for patients.<br /><br />Keywords: Thoracotomy, lung cancer diagnosis, malignancy of the thoracic cavity. <br /><br />In summary, this study highlights the importance of accurate postoperative diagnosis in thoracic malignancies and emphasizes the need for timely intervention in cases of suspected malignancy.
