Pdf Summary
The study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of the post-operative diagnosis of thoracic malignancies in patients who underwent thoracotomy at the National Respiratory Center Persahabatan Hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia. The researchers analyzed the diagnostic changes between pre and post-operative diagnoses.

Lung cancer is the most common thoracic malignancy and is often diagnosed at an advanced stage due to its slow progression and lack of specific symptoms. The study involved patients who had undergone thoracotomy and histopathological examination at the hospital between January 2022 and December 2022.

The results showed that 58.69% of the cases underwent thoracotomy for treatment purposes, while 41.31% were for diagnostic purposes. The post-operative diagnostic findings revealed that all cases diagnosed with lung cancer prior to the surgery remained the same, but there were histopathological changes observed.

In cases where the pre-operative diagnosis was clinically thoracic malignancy, 68% of the cases were diagnosed with lung cancer post-operatively, while 32% were diagnosed with mediastinal tumors. The histopathological changes in lung cancer cases included variations such as adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

The study suggested that exploration thoracotomy should be performed promptly for suspected malignancies when other diagnostic procedures have not yet provided a definite diagnosis. This would enable timely initiation of appropriate therapy for improved prognoses.

In summary, the study found that the accuracy of post-operative thoracic malignancy diagnosis at the National Respiratory Center Persahabatan Hospital was high, with consistent lung cancer diagnoses. However, there were histopathological changes observed in some cases. Prompt exploration thoracotomy was recommended for suspected malignancies to enable timely treatment.
