Pdf Summary
In this study, researchers aimed to evaluate the efficacy of preoperative biopsy in predicting the newly proposed histologic grade of resected lung adenocarcinoma. The study included 222 patients with invasive lung adenocarcinomas who underwent surgery between January 2013 and December 2020. The histological subtypes of preoperative biopsy and surgically resected specimens were determined and classified according to the newly established WHO grading system.

The overall concordance rate of histological grades between preoperative biopsy and surgically resected samples was found to be 81.5%. The concordance rate for grade 1 (well-differentiated) and grade 3 (poorly differentiated) was higher compared to grade 2 (moderately differentiated). The overall concordance rate was not significantly influenced by biopsy characteristics or pathological features of surgically resected specimens.

The researchers concluded that preoperative biopsy specimens can accurately predict the novel histological grades, especially grades 1 and 3, of surgically resected specimens. This new grading system provides more accurate predictions than the previous system, regardless of preoperative biopsy or clinicopathological characteristics.

The findings suggest that preoperative biopsy can be a useful tool in determining the histologic grade of lung adenocarcinoma prior to surgery. This information can be valuable in guiding treatment decisions and determining prognosis for patients. The study highlights the importance of accurate histological grading in lung adenocarcinoma and the potential role of preoperative biopsy in improving prognostic accuracy.
