Pdf Summary
Researchers from Kansai Medical University in Japan have discovered that the presence of MECA-79-positive tumor cells is associated with the recurrence of pathological stage IA lung adenocarcinoma. MECA-79-positive tumor cells have been found to be a prognostic marker for several types of cancer, including gastric cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, bladder cancer, and breast cancer. MECA-79 is normally found in high endothelial venules but has now been identified in tumor cells.

The study included 195 patients with stage IA adenocarcinoma who had undergone complete resection by lobectomy. Exclusion criteria included neoadjuvant therapy and certain variants of adenocarcinoma. The presence of MECA-79-positive tumor cells was detected using an anti-human MECA-79 antibody.

The researchers found that patients with MECA-79-positive tumor cells had a significantly lower 5-year recurrence-free survival rate compared to those with MECA-79-negative tumor cells (54.9% vs. 87.4%). In the multivariate analysis, MECA-79-positive tumor cells were found to be an independent risk factor for recurrence.

The study has some limitations, including its retrospective nature, single-institutional design, small sample size, and limited generalizability. Additionally, the study did not include data on gene alterations such as EGFR, KRAS, and ALK.

The results of this study suggest that the presence of MECA-79-positive tumor cells may have clinical significance in predicting the recurrence of stage IA lung adenocarcinoma. Further research is needed to validate these findings and understand the underlying mechanisms.
