Pdf Summary
A study conducted by the Medical University of Vienna and the National Koranyi Institute of Pulmonology in Budapest aimed to evaluate the potential diagnostic and prognostic significance of Activin A (ActA) in lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) patients. ActA is a member of the transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) family and its dysregulation has been reported in various malignancies. Previous studies have shown that high levels of ActA are a negative prognostic factor in other types of lung cancer.

The study collected plasma samples from 94 treatment naive LUSC patients and compared them to age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The results showed that ActA plasma levels were significantly higher in LUSC patients compared to non-malignant controls. These ActA levels also correlated with advanced stage and various clinicopathological parameters.

Furthermore, patients with high ActA plasma levels had a significantly worse overall and disease-free survival compared to those with low levels. These findings suggest that ActA levels may help identify LUSC patients with advanced stages and improve the prediction of prognosis.

In conclusion, the study highlights the potential of ActA as a biomarker for LUSC. Further research in this area could lead to the development of targeted treatment options for LUSC patients and improve their overall prognosis.
