Pdf Summary
A study was conducted to compare the outcomes of different treatments for patients with stage II non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who are not candidates for surgery. The study analyzed data from the National Cancer Database (NCDB) and included 4650 patients diagnosed with stage II NSCLC between 2004 and 2018. The patients were divided into three treatment groups: radiation only, chemotherapy only, and chemoradiation (concurrent or sequential).

The results showed that chemoradiation had the highest 5-year survival rate compared to radiation and chemotherapy alone. The 5-year survival rates were 13.2% for radiation, 16% for chemotherapy, and 24.9% for chemoradiation. Further analysis demonstrated that chemoradiation had a significant survival benefit over other treatments across all subgroups, including different age groups, genders, races, and comorbidity levels.

The study also compared the outcomes of concurrent chemoradiation and sequential radiation and chemotherapy. The results showed that there was no significant difference in survival between the two approaches.

Overall, the study concluded that chemoradiation is the optimal treatment option for patients with stage II NSCLC who are not candidates for surgery. It provided a survival advantage compared to radiation or chemotherapy alone, and the benefit was consistent across different patient subgroups.

The findings of this study have important implications for clinical practice and treatment decision-making for stage II NSCLC patients who cannot undergo surgery. The results support the use of chemoradiation as the standard of care in these cases, offering improved survival outcomes.
