Pdf Summary
Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common problem for surgical patients after general anesthesia. In this study, the researchers aimed to determine the incidence of PONV in thoracic surgery patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and evaluate the effectiveness of prophylactic antiemetics. They analyzed data from 254 patients who underwent anatomical resection for NSCLC at the Shizuoka Cancer Center.

The study found that the incidence of PONV per Apfel score was slightly higher than previously reported. Apfel scores of 2 were significantly related to PONV, suggesting that patients with this score may benefit from antiemetic treatment. Droperidol was found to be effective in suppressing early PONV, particularly on the day of surgery (POD0). However, its effectiveness in reducing the need for rescue antiemetics was limited. Ganisetron showed a trend towards preventing PONV but did not have a significant effect in this study.

The researchers recommend that patients with an Apfel score of 2, indicating a higher risk of PONV, should receive combined antiemetic treatment such as a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist or D2 receptor antagonist in thoracic surgery.

Overall, this study highlights the importance of assessing the risk of PONV in surgical patients and implementing appropriate prophylactic antiemetic strategies to improve patient outcomes.
